A modern car key does two jobs. The blade, or the button on a push-to-start fob, gets you in the door. A small transponder chip inside the head of the key does the second job: it has a short coded exchange with the car's immobilizer, and if that exchange fails the engine will not run. That's why a hardware-store copy can turn the ignition and still leave you sitting in the driveway. Transponder key programming is the step that introduces a new chip to your vehicle's computer so the car recognizes it as a legitimate key.

Around Los Angeles we program keys for drivers who have lost their only key, bought a used car with a single worn key, need a spare before a long drive on the I-10 or I-405, or have a key whose chip quit after years of being dropped on concrete. Because we're fully mobile, with no storefront, the programming happens where your car is: curbside on a Craftsman block in Leimert Park, in a Koreatown apartment garage, or in a parking structure near Union Station.

Crenshaw Lock Company has worked out of the Crenshaw area since 1987, and owner and lead technician David Shar has watched car keys go from plain brass blades to encrypted smart fobs. We'll tell you plainly what your vehicle needs, what we can do on site, and when a dealer-only situation makes another route the better choice.

How it works in Los Angeles

  1. 1

    Tell us about the vehicle

When you call (323) 997-8867, we'll ask for the year, make and model, whether you have any working key, and whether the car uses a turn key, a flip key, or push-button start. The VIN, which you can read through the lower corner of the windshield, helps us confirm the correct transponder type and key blank before we head out.

  2. 2

    We come to your car

We drive to where the vehicle is parked, whether that's a driveway in View Park-Windsor Hills, a street spot in West Adams, or a structure Downtown. We'll ask to see ID and registration or other proof of ownership before any programming is done. That protects you, and it's simply how responsible locksmiths handle car keys.

  3. 3

    Cut the blade

For keys with a metal blade, we cut the new key to match your car, either from an existing key or from the lock or code information when every key is gone. We check the cut by hand in the door and ignition so the mechanical side works smoothly before we touch the electronics.

  4. 4

Program the transponder to the immobilizer

Using diagnostic programming equipment connected to the vehicle's port, we register the new chip with the immobilizer. On some vehicles that also means pairing remote lock and unlock buttons. If you're adding a spare, your existing keys stay active. If a key was lost or stolen, we can usually erase it from the car's memory so it can no longer start the engine.

  5. 5

    Test everything before we leave

We start the car several times with each programmed key, test the remote functions, and make sure no immobilizer or security light stays on. You won't be left wondering whether the key will work tomorrow morning.

What affects the price

  • Vehicle make, model and year, since some immobilizer systems are far more involved to access and program than others
  • Key type: a basic chip key, a remote-head flip key, and a proximity smart fob differ in hardware cost and programming time
  • Whether you have a working key to clone or add from, or every key is lost and a new key has to be originated
  • How many keys you want programmed during the same visit, and whether lost keys need to be erased from the car's memory
  • Time of day and day of week, because late-night, weekend and holiday calls are handled around the clock
  • Location and access, such as a tight underground garage or a vehicle that has to be reached in a restricted lot

Why Los Angeles chooses us

  • Locally owned and operated around Crenshaw since 1987, with owner David Shar still doing the work himself
  • Fully mobile, 24/7: we program keys at your vehicle anywhere across our Los Angeles service area, so you don't need to tow the car anywhere
  • We verify ownership before we cut or program any car key, so a stranger can't use us to get a working key to your vehicle
  • We tell you honestly when a vehicle can't be done on site and needs the dealer, instead of experimenting on your car's computer
  • When a key has been lost or stolen, we can remove it from the immobilizer memory so it no longer starts the car
  • We test every key in your hand, including starts and remote functions, before we close out the job

Transponder Key Programming across Los Angeles

Our home base is the 90008 ZIP, where Crenshaw Blvd meets Martin Luther King Jr Blvd beside Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. We get a steady run of car key calls right here. One common one is a weekend lockout in the Plaza parking structure that turns into a programming job because the only key is gone. Another is a resident in Leimert Park Village or up the hill in Baldwin Hills who wants a spare made before the last key gives out. Plenty of homes in View Park-Windsor Hills and Baldwin Hills have narrow, steep driveways or vintage detached garages. Working at the vehicle where it's parked spares you a tow down those slopes.

From there we cover a lot of Los Angeles. Drivers in West Adams and around Exposition Park, USC and the LA Memorial Coliseum (90007, 90018, 90037) often call us after losing keys on game days or around campus. In Koreatown (90006, 90019) and Hollywood (90027, 90046), many cars live in tight subterranean apartment garages under dingbat and mid-century buildings. Downtown (90012) work often means structures near Union Station or Walt Disney Concert Hall. We route along the I-10, I-110, La Brea Ave and Slauson Ave to reach you.

Wherever you're parked, from a curb near Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area to a lot below Griffith Observatory, the job itself is the same. We confirm you own the car, cut the key, program the chip to the immobilizer, and test it until it starts every time.

Transponder Key Programming in Los Angeles — FAQs

Why won't my copied key start my car even though it turns the ignition?
The blade is cut correctly, but the transponder chip hasn't been programmed to your car's immobilizer, or the copy has no chip at all. The car detects an unrecognized key and blocks the engine. We can program a proper chip key at your vehicle. Call (323) 997-8867.
I lost my only car key in Los Angeles. Can you still make one?
In many cases, yes. With proof of ownership, we can often originate a new key from the vehicle itself and program it on site, wherever the car is parked in our LA service area. Some newer models are dealer-only, and we'll tell you up front if yours is one of them. Reach us 24/7 at (323) 997-8867.
Do I need to tow my car to you?
No. We're fully mobile and don't have a storefront. We come to the car, whether it's in a Koreatown garage, on a West Adams street, or in the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza structure.
Can you program push-to-start smart keys and remotes?
We program many proximity fobs and remote-head keys, including the lock and unlock buttons. Compatibility depends on make, model and year, so share those details and the VIN when you call (323) 997-8867, and we'll confirm before we head out.
What should I have ready when you arrive?
A photo ID and the registration, title, or another document showing the car is yours, plus any existing keys, even ones that don't work well. We won't program a key without verifying ownership.
My key was stolen. Can the thief still start my car?
A stolen programmed key can start the car until it's removed from the immobilizer's memory. When we program your replacement keys, we can usually erase the missing key on many vehicles so it no longer works.
How much does transponder key programming cost?
It depends on your vehicle, the type of key, whether you have a working key, how many keys you need, and the time of the call. We'll give you a quote for your specific car when you call rather than a one-size number.
Do you work late at night or on weekends?
Yes. Crenshaw Lock Company operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week across Los Angeles, including holidays. Call (323) 997-8867 anytime.
