A lock rarely fails all at once. In Los Angeles it usually starts small: a key that needs jiggling, a deadbolt that only throws if you lift the door, a latch that no longer catches after a hot, dry summer shifts the frame. Left alone, those small problems become the night you can't lock up, or the morning a key snaps off in the cylinder. Lock repair is about catching the problem at the right stage and fixing the actual cause, not just swapping hardware by default.

Crenshaw Lock Company has worked on Los Angeles doors since 1987, and owner and lead technician David Shar has seen how the city's housing shapes its lock problems. Spanish Colonial Revival and Craftsman homes around Leimert Park and West Adams still carry original mortise locks with parts that aren't sold at hardware stores. Courtyard and dingbat apartments see heavy daily use on entry deadbolts. Security screen doors and window bars, common across South LA, have their own latches and hinges that bend and wear. Each needs a different approach.

We are fully mobile, with no storefront, so the repair happens where the lock is. We bring parts, pinning kits and tools to your home or building, diagnose on site, and explain what we found before any work begins. When repair makes sense, we repair. When a lock is truly worn out or no longer protects you, we'll say so plainly and show you options.

How it works in Los Angeles

  1. 1

Tell us what the lock is doing

When you call (323) 997-8867, describe the symptom: a key that turns hard, a bolt that won't extend fully, a knob that spins loose, a latch that misses the strike. Mention the type of door and building, such as a Craftsman front door, an apartment entry or an iron screen door, so we come prepared with the right parts.

  2. 2

    On-site diagnosis

At your door we test the lock with the key and by hand, check how the bolt meets the strike plate, and look at hinges, frame and door alignment. Many 'broken lock' calls are really a sagging door or shifted strike, and fixing the lock alone would not last.

  3. 3

    Explain findings and options

Before any work, we tell you what is wrong and what it takes to fix it. If an original mortise lock can be cleaned, re-sprung or refitted, we say so. If the cylinder is worn beyond service, we explain repair versus replacement and the tradeoffs so you decide.

  4. 4

    Repair and adjust

Typical work includes cleaning and lubricating cylinders, replacing worn pins and springs, tightening or rebuilding loose lever and knob assemblies, realigning or relocating strike plates, shimming hinges, extracting broken keys and straightening bent security door latches.

  5. 5

Test and walk you through it

We operate the lock repeatedly from both sides, with the door open and closed, so the bolt throws smoothly without pushing or lifting. We point out anything to watch and share simple care tips suited to the hardware you have.

What affects the price

  • The type of lock: a standard deadbolt or knobset is usually simpler to service than an original 1920s mortise lock or a high-security cylinder with restricted parts.
  • Whether the problem is the lock itself or the door, frame or strike alignment, which may need hinge adjustment, strike relocation or frame work.
  • Parts required, such as replacement pins, springs, cylinders or mortise components, and whether vintage parts must be matched or adapted.
  • Damage from a forced entry or break-in, including pried frames, bent bolts or a damaged wrought-iron security screen door.
  • Number of locks and doors involved, for example several apartment units or every exterior door of a house serviced in one visit.
  • Time of the call, since late-night, weekend and holiday emergency service can differ from a scheduled weekday visit.

Why Los Angeles chooses us

  • Serving Los Angeles since 1987, with owner David Shar personally leading the work rather than handing customers off to a rotating crew.
  • Real experience with the city's older housing stock, including original mortise locks and skeleton-key interior doors found in Leimert Park, West Adams and View Park homes.
  • Repair first when repair is the honest answer; we don't push new hardware on a lock that can be properly fixed.
  • Fully mobile and available 24/7, so we come to your house, apartment or business at any hour with no storefront visit needed.
  • Comfortable with security screen doors and door bars common across South LA, not just the lock inside the main door.
  • Clear explanations before work begins, so you know what was wrong, what we did and why.

Lock Repair across Los Angeles

Our home base is the 90008 ZIP, in the heart of the Crenshaw corridor, and the neighborhoods around it shape much of our lock repair work. Leimert Park's village-planned homes and nearby courtyard apartments, the period-revival and mid-century houses of Baldwin Hills and View Park-Windsor Hills, and the Craftsman and Spanish Colonial bungalows of West Adams often still use original mortise hardware. A typical call might be a tenant turnover in a 1920s Craftsman duplex off Crenshaw Blvd near Leimert Park Village, where the original mortise lock is worn past saving and we fit a modern deadbolt while keeping the door's character intact.

We also handle the aftermath of break-ins. In West Adams, re-securing a bungalow can mean straightening a pried wrought-iron security screen door so it latches again, repairing the damaged frame and installing a Grade-1 deadbolt. Between the hills around Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area and the flats along Martin Luther King Jr Blvd and Slauson Ave, soil movement and age make sagging doors and misaligned strikes a common cause of locks that suddenly stop catching.

Beyond South LA, we travel Crenshaw Blvd, La Brea Ave and the I-10 and I-110 to reach Koreatown, Hollywood, Downtown and the neighborhoods around Exposition Park and USC, including ZIPs such as 90018, 90016, 90043, 90019, 90006, 90007, 90027 and 90012. That covers hillside homes below Griffith Observatory, dingbat apartments in Koreatown and newer multifamily buildings near Union Station, all with different hardware, all serviced at your door.

Lock Repair in Los Angeles — FAQs

Can you repair an original 1920s mortise lock, or does it have to be replaced?
Many can be repaired. Older mortise locks in Leimert Park, West Adams and View Park homes often just need cleaning, new springs or an adjusted strike. If parts are broken beyond repair or the lock no longer protects you, we'll explain options, including adding a modern deadbolt. Call (323) 997-8867 to describe your lock.
Why does my deadbolt only lock when I push or lift the door?
That usually means the bolt and strike plate no longer line up, often from a sagging door, loose hinges or a shifting frame. We adjust hinges, reposition the strike or shim the door so the bolt throws freely, which also protects the lock from wear.
Do you come to my home, or do I bring the lock to a shop?
We are fully mobile with no storefront. We come to your house, apartment or business anywhere in our Los Angeles service area and do the repair on site, any time of day or night.
Can you fix a bent wrought-iron security screen door after a break-in attempt?
Yes. We regularly straighten pried security screen doors, repair their latches and locks, and check the main door behind them. After a break-in we can also strengthen the entry with a Grade-1 deadbolt. Call (323) 997-8867, day or night, to get your home secured.
How much does lock repair cost in Los Angeles?
It depends on the lock type, whether the issue is the lock or the door alignment, parts needed, any forced-entry damage, how many locks are involved and the time of service. We explain what we find and the cost before starting work.
Is it better to repair or rekey after a tenant moves out?
If the lock works well, rekeying is usually enough so old keys stop working. If it is sticking, loose or worn, we can repair or replace it during the same visit, which is common in older duplexes and courtyard buildings.
A key broke off in my lock. Can you get it out without replacing the lock?
In most cases, yes. We extract the broken piece, check the cylinder for damage, and cut a new key if needed. If pins were damaged, we can usually service the cylinder rather than replace the whole lock. Call (323) 997-8867 any hour.
