Access control is about more than putting a keypad on a door. It is about deciding who gets in, when, and what happens when an employee leaves or a fob goes missing. For a small shop on Crenshaw Blvd, that might mean a standalone keypad with a handful of codes. For a multi-tenant building in Koreatown or an office suite Downtown, it could mean card or fob readers tied to software that lets you add and remove users without cutting a single key.
Crenshaw Lock Company has worked on Los Angeles doors since 1987, and owner and lead technician David Shar still approaches every job the way it started: look at the actual door, frame and hardware first, then recommend something that fits. Los Angeles commercial buildings are a mix of 1920s brick storefronts, mid-century strip centers, converted bungalows and new mixed-use construction. Each presents different challenges, from aluminum storefront frames with narrow stiles to heavy hollow-metal doors with old mortise hardware still in place.
Because we are fully mobile, there is no counter to visit. We bring the tools and hardware to your location, assess the entrance in person, and install on site. If something goes wrong after hours, such as a reader failing or a lock not releasing, we answer around the clock.
How it works in Los Angeles
- 1
Talk through how your entrance is used
We start with a conversation, by phone at (323) 997-8867 or on site. How many people need access? Do you need schedules, such as doors unlocking during business hours? Do you need a record of who entered and when? A neighborhood salon has very different needs than a Downtown office floor, and the answers shape every choice that follows.
- 2
Inspect the door, frame and existing hardware
We look at the door material, frame condition, stile width, existing locks, power availability and any wrought-iron security gate in front of the entrance. Older Los Angeles buildings often have original mortise locks or doors that have shifted over decades, and those details determine whether a keypad lever, electric strike, maglock or exit device makes sense and stays code-conscious for safe egress.
- 3
Recommend a system that fits
We explain the realistic options: standalone keypad locks, card or fob readers, or networked systems you can manage remotely. We tell you plainly what each does well and where it falls short, so you are not paying for features you will not use or skipping ones you will need later.
- 4
Install on site
We come to your business with the hardware and handle the mechanical work: mounting readers, fitting strikes or locks, aligning the door so it latches reliably, and setting up the controller. We try to schedule around your operating hours so the entrance stays usable.
- 5
Program, test and hand off
We enroll your initial codes, cards or fobs, test the door repeatedly including egress from the inside, and walk you or your manager through adding and deleting users. You leave knowing how to revoke a lost fob immediately instead of waiting to rekey.
- 6
Ongoing support, day or night
Doors take abuse, especially high-traffic entrances. If a reader stops responding or a strike fails, we are available 24/7 to come out, diagnose and repair, and to keep a mechanical key override working as a backup.

What affects the price
- Type of system: a standalone keypad lock is a simpler install than card or fob readers connected to a controller and management software.
- Number of doors and readers: one front entrance costs less than outfitting a front door, rear service door and interior suites.
- Door and frame condition: aluminum storefront frames, hollow-metal doors and older wood doors each require different hardware, and worn or out-of-square doors may need adjustment before an electronic lock will work reliably.
- Locking hardware needed: electric strikes, maglocks, electrified levers and exit devices vary in complexity, and egress requirements influence which is appropriate.
- Power and wiring: whether power is already near the door, and how far cable must run through walls or ceilings, affects labor.
- Credentials and features: the number of cards or fobs, scheduling, audit trails and remote management all factor into the total.
Why Los Angeles chooses us
- Locally rooted since 1987, with owner David Shar personally leading the work rather than handing it off to an unknown subcontractor.
- Fully mobile and available 24/7, so installation, repairs and failed-lock calls happen at your entrance on your timeline.
- Deep familiarity with older Los Angeles building stock, including original mortise hardware, shifted frames and storefronts fronted by wrought-iron security gates.
- Straight answers about which system fits your business, including when a simpler standalone keypad is the better choice.
- Locksmith skills alongside electronic installation, so we can also rekey, replace deadbolts and keep a reliable mechanical override in place.
- We train you to manage users yourself, so a departing employee or lost fob does not become a security problem.
Access Control across Los Angeles
Our home base is the Crenshaw area in 90008, and many of the businesses we work with sit along Crenshaw Blvd, Martin Luther King Jr Blvd and Slauson Ave, near Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza and Leimert Park Village. These corridors are full of independent shops, churches, salons, restaurants and professional offices, often in older buildings with roll-down gates or wrought-iron security screens in front of the main door. Adding a keypad or fob reader there means planning around the gate and the original hardware, which is something we deal with routinely in Leimert Park, Baldwin Hills, View Park-Windsor Hills and West Adams.
Farther out, the work changes character. Koreatown (90006) and the blocks around Hollywood (90027, 90046) include many mid-century and dingbat-style apartment buildings and mixed-use properties where owners want fob access for lobby doors, garages and mailrooms so they can stop chasing unreturned keys after tenant turnover. Downtown (90012) and the areas near Exposition Park and USC (90007) bring office suites, creative studios and newer multifamily buildings with glass storefronts and heavier commercial doors.
We travel the I-10, I-110 and I-405 every day, along with La Brea Ave, to reach clients across the city. Whether your business is a few blocks from Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area or near Union Station, we come to you, look at the actual entrance, and install a system that suits how your building is used.
