A panic bar has one job that matters most: letting people out quickly and without thinking when something goes wrong. It also has to keep the door secure the rest of the time. Getting both right depends on the door, the frame, the hardware and how the building is used, which is why a panic bar is not simply a part you bolt on.

We install new exit devices on doors that need them, replace worn or broken ones, and repair bars that stick, fail to latch, rattle, or no longer retract smoothly. That includes rim devices, vertical rod devices, and the trim, strikes and cylinders that go with them, on storefronts, offices, warehouses, restaurants, schools, churches and other commercial properties.

Crenshaw Lock Company has served this region since 1987, led by owner and lead technician David Shar. Because we are fully mobile, there is no shop to visit. We work on your door, on site, and we will tell you plainly what the door needs and what it does not. Requirements for exit hardware vary by occupancy and jurisdiction, so for code questions we recommend confirming with your local building or fire authority.

How our panic bar installation service works

  1. 1

Talk through the door and how it is used

Call (323) 997-8867 and tell us about the door: single or double, glass or solid, whether it is an existing exit device or a new one, and whether it needs to stay locked from outside. This helps us arrive with the right type of hardware in mind.

  2. 2

Inspect the door, frame and existing hardware

On site we check door thickness and material, frame condition, alignment, the closer, and any existing device. A panic bar on a sagging or misaligned door will keep failing, so we look at the whole opening.

  3. 3

    Choose the right device

We match the device to the door: rim or vertical rod, fire-rated where the door requires it, with the right trim and outside cylinder or key control. We explain the options and the tradeoffs before we start.

  4. 4

Install or repair with proper alignment

We mount the device, set the strike and adjust the latch so it engages cleanly and releases with a normal push. For repairs we replace worn parts, clear sticking mechanisms and correct alignment rather than just forcing it to work.

  5. 5

Test and walk you through it

We operate the bar repeatedly, confirm the door closes and latches on its own, and check the outside key or trim function. We show you how it works and what to watch for so problems are caught early.

What affects the price

  • The type of device: a basic rim exit device differs from a vertical rod or concealed rod device, and double doors need more hardware.
  • Whether the door is fire-rated, which limits the hardware that can be used and affects how it must be installed.
  • The condition of the door and frame, since reinforcement, drilling for new hardware, or alignment work adds labor.
  • Repair versus replacement: adjusting or replacing a worn part is a different job than installing a complete new device.
  • Outside trim and keying needs, such as a lever, a key cylinder, or matching existing keys to your system.
  • Number of doors and after-hours or emergency timing, which can change how the work is scheduled.

Why choose us

  • Fully mobile: we do the work at your door, with no storefront or trip to a shop needed.
  • In business since 1987, with owner David Shar leading the work.
  • We evaluate the door, frame and closer, not only the bar, so the repair lasts.
  • We explain whether repair or replacement makes more sense and do not push new hardware you do not need.
  • Available 24/7, which matters when a broken exit device leaves a door unable to secure or unsafe to use.
  • We point you to your local building or fire authority for code questions instead of guessing at requirements.

Where we work

We serve commercial customers throughout Greater Los Angeles: the San Fernando Valley, the San Gabriel Valley, the South Bay and Harbor area, the Westside, the Gateway Cities, and Central and South LA. Retail strips, industrial buildings, restaurants, offices, schools and places of worship all rely on working exit doors, and we travel to each of them.

We also work in parts of Ventura County. Because everything we do is mobile, you will not need to bring anything in. Call (323) 997-8867 with your location and the door in question, and we will let you know how we can help.

Panic Bar Installation — FAQs

What is the difference between a panic bar and an exit device?
They usually mean the same thing. An exit device, often called a panic bar, lets people leave by pushing a bar or touchpad. Types include rim, vertical rod and mortise devices. Call (323) 997-8867 if you are unsure which your door has.
Can you repair my existing panic bar instead of replacing it?
Often yes. Sticking, loose, misaligned or worn parts can frequently be adjusted or replaced. If the device is badly damaged or parts are unavailable, we will explain why replacement makes more sense.
Can the door still be locked from the outside?
Yes. Exit devices can be paired with an outside lever, pull or key cylinder, depending on the door. The inside should still allow exit without a key. We can set up outside keying to suit how you use the door.
Do you install panic bars on double doors?
Yes. Double doors may use two devices, or vertical rod devices, sometimes with a removable mullion. We look at the opening and recommend a setup that works with how the doors are used.
Does my door need fire-rated hardware?
Some doors do, and it limits what can be installed. Your local building or fire authority can tell you what applies to your property. We can install fire-rated devices where required and check the door's labeling.
Do you handle panic bar problems after hours?
Yes, we are available 24/7. A door that will not latch or will not open from inside is worth addressing right away. Call (323) 997-8867 and describe what is happening.
Can you fix a door that does not latch properly with its exit device?
Usually. Poor latching is often caused by strike position, door sag, or a closer needing adjustment. We check the whole opening and correct the cause rather than only the bar.
What kinds of businesses do you work with?
We handle retail shops, restaurants, offices, warehouses, schools, churches and other commercial properties across our service area. Describe your door and we will tell you how we can help.
