A deadbolt is the part of your door that does most of the real work keeping people out. Unlike the spring latch in a standard doorknob, a deadbolt uses a solid bolt that extends into the door frame and does not retract unless the cylinder or thumb turn moves it. Adding one to a door that has only a knob lock, or replacing a worn, loose, or outdated one, is among the most practical security upgrades a home can get.

Crenshaw Lock Company has served Los Angeles-area homes since 1987, and owner and lead technician David Shar built the business on doing this kind of work properly. We are a fully mobile locksmith, so we come to your home with the tools and hardware needed. There is no storefront to visit. We look at your door, talk through single-cylinder versus double-cylinder options, and install the deadbolt so it throws smoothly and seats firmly in the frame.

Many deadbolt problems come from installation rather than the lock itself: a bolt that rubs the strike, a door that has to be lifted to lock, or a strike plate held with short screws. We pay attention to those details because they decide whether a deadbolt actually protects you. Call (323) 997-8867 any time, day or night.

How our deadbolt installation service works

  1. 1

Talk through your door and your goals

We start by learning which door is involved, whether it already has a deadbolt, and what worries you. Entry door, back door, or garage access each has different needs, and so do households with kids, renters, or older family members.

  2. 2

    Choose single- or double-cylinder

A single-cylinder deadbolt uses a key outside and a thumb turn inside. A double-cylinder needs a key on both sides, which can suit doors with glass nearby but can slow exit in an emergency. We explain the tradeoffs so you decide with clear information.

  3. 3

    Check the door and frame

We inspect door thickness, edge condition, existing bore holes, and the frame. A door that is warped, cracked, or has a loose frame can undermine even a good deadbolt, so we tell you honestly what we see.

  4. 4

    Install or replace the deadbolt

If there is no deadbolt, we prepare the door for one. If we are replacing, we remove the old unit and fit the new one in the existing holes where possible. We align the bolt and strike so it extends fully without binding.

  5. 5

    Reinforce the strike and test

We set the strike plate in the frame and can use longer screws that reach the framing behind it, which helps the door resist force. We then test the lock repeatedly, with the door open and closed, until it operates smoothly.

  6. 6

Hand over keys and show you the lock

We give you the keys, confirm they work, and show you how the lock operates. If you want several locks keyed alike, ask us and we will discuss what is possible for your hardware.

What affects the price

  • Whether you are adding a brand-new deadbolt to a door or replacing an existing one, since a new install involves more preparation of the door.
  • Single-cylinder versus double-cylinder, and the grade and brand of hardware you choose.
  • Door material and condition, such as solid wood, metal, or hollow-core, and whether the edge or bore holes need repair.
  • Frame and strike work, including reinforcing the strike plate or fixing a frame that has loosened or split.
  • How many doors you want done in one visit, and whether you want them keyed alike.
  • Time of day and your location within our service area, since we offer 24/7 mobile service.

Why choose us

  • We have been serving Los Angeles-area homes since 1987, with owner and lead tech David Shar leading the work.
  • Fully mobile: we bring the hardware and tools to your door instead of asking you to come to a shop.
  • We look at the door and frame before recommending a lock, rather than selling one product for every situation.
  • We explain the safety tradeoffs of double-cylinder deadbolts honestly, including exit concerns during emergencies.
  • We pay attention to alignment and strike installation, the details that make a deadbolt work smoothly and hold up.
  • Available 24/7 at (323) 997-8867, including when a break-in or damaged lock makes a secure door urgent.

Deadbolt Installation — FAQs

What is the difference between a deadbolt and a regular doorknob lock?
A knob lock usually relies on a spring latch that can be pushed back with force or a tool. A deadbolt uses a solid bolt that stays extended until the key or thumb turn retracts it, giving the door much better resistance. Call (323) 997-8867 if you want to add one.
Should I choose single-cylinder or double-cylinder?
Single-cylinder is the common choice for most homes because you can open it quickly from inside. Double-cylinder may suit a door with glass nearby, but it needs a key to exit, which can be a hazard in a fire. We will go over both with you.
Can you add a deadbolt to a door that only has a knob?
Often yes. We check the door's thickness and condition, then prepare it for a deadbolt. Some doors, such as very thin or damaged ones, may need extra work or a different recommendation, and we will tell you plainly.
Can you replace a deadbolt that is hard to turn?
Yes. Sometimes the lock is worn, but often the bolt and strike are misaligned because the door has shifted. We diagnose which it is, and replace the lock or adjust the alignment as needed.
Do you reinforce the strike plate?
We can set the strike in the frame with longer screws that reach the framing behind it, which helps the door hold up against force. We will tell you if the frame itself looks weak.
Can you do several doors at once or key them alike?
In many cases, yes. If you want multiple deadbolts installed in one visit, tell us when you call. Keying alike depends on the hardware chosen, and we can discuss options at (323) 997-8867.
Do you install deadbolts at night or on weekends?
Yes, we are available 24/7. If your door has been damaged or you need a secure lock urgently, call (323) 997-8867 and we will see how we can help.
Do I need to come to a shop to pick out a deadbolt?
No. We are fully mobile and have no storefront. We come to your home, look at the door, and install the deadbolt there.
