Installing a lock where none existed before is a different job from swapping an old one. There is no existing hole to rely on, so the door has to be measured, marked and drilled correctly from the start. A new door from a remodel, an added bedroom or office door, a gate, a converted garage, or a side entry that was never secured all fit this description.

The work is precise. A cross bore for the lockset and a edge bore for the latch must line up with the strike plate on the frame, and the backset has to suit the hardware. Done carefully, the door closes smoothly and the bolt throws fully into the frame. Done carelessly, it sticks, rattles, or weakens the door.

Crenshaw Lock Company has served this region since 1987, led by owner and lead tech David Shar. We are mobile only, so there is no shop to visit. We bring the tools and a selection of hardware to your door and help you choose what fits how you use it.

How our lock installation service works

  1. 1

Talk through the door and the goal

Call (323) 997-8867 and tell us about the door: material, thickness, whether it is interior or exterior, and what you want the lock to do. That helps us bring suitable hardware.

  2. 2

    Inspect the door and frame

On site we check the door for thickness and condition, and the frame for solid wood to anchor the strike. A hollow or damaged door may need reinforcement before a lock is worth fitting.

  3. 3

    Choose the hardware

We go over options such as a deadbolt, knob or lever set, or a combination, and help you match function and security level to the door's location.

  4. 4

    Mark and drill

We mark the height and backset, then bore the cross hole and latch edge hole with the right bits, keeping the door face clean and the cuts square.

  5. 5

Mortise the latch and fit the strike

We set the latch plate flush and install the strike on the frame, aligned so the bolt engages fully without forcing the door.

  6. 6

    Test and hand over keys

We cycle the lock repeatedly with the door open and closed, check alignment, and give you the keys and a brief walkthrough.

What affects the price

  • The type of lock chosen, from a basic passage set to a keyed deadbolt or a higher-security grade
  • The number of doors or locks being installed in one visit
  • Door material and condition, since solid wood, metal, glass and hollow-core doors need different handling
  • Whether the frame needs reinforcement or a heavier strike plate
  • Any special requirements such as keyed-alike sets or a particular finish
  • Time of day and location, since we serve after-hours calls around the clock

Why choose us

  • Fully mobile service: we work at your door with no storefront trip
  • In business serving this region since 1987, with owner David Shar as lead tech
  • We start from your door and frame, not a one-size-fits-all package
  • We will tell you if a door is too weak to hold a lock well and explain the options
  • Available 24/7, including evenings and weekends
  • We test the finished install and explain how it works before we leave

Lock Installation — FAQs

What does lock installation cover?
It covers fitting a new lock where none existed, such as a new door, an added room, or a door that was never secured. It includes drilling, fitting the latch and strike, and testing.
How is this different from a lock change or rekey?
A change or rekey works with an existing lock and bore holes. A new installation requires measuring and drilling the door and frame from scratch. Call (323) 997-8867 if you are unsure which you need.
Can you install a lock on any door?
Most solid wood, metal and many composite doors can take one. Very thin, hollow or damaged doors may need reinforcement first, and we will tell you honestly what we see.
Do I need to buy the hardware first?
Not necessarily. We can bring hardware and help you pick. If you already have a lock, tell us the brand and type when you call so we can check it suits the door.
Can you install several locks in one visit?
Yes. Many customers do multiple doors at once after a remodel, and we can also offer keyed-alike sets so one key works throughout.
Do you come out at night or on weekends?
Yes, we are available 24/7. Call (323) 997-8867 and we will talk through the job and scheduling.
What should I prepare before you arrive?
Make sure the door is hung and closes properly, and that we can reach both sides. Note what you want the lock to do, such as keyed from outside only.
How is the price determined?
It depends on the hardware, number of doors, door material, and whether the frame needs reinforcing. We talk through these factors before work starts.
