A mailbox lock is easy to overlook until the key goes missing, the cylinder starts to stick, or you realize a former tenant or roommate still has a copy. Mail carries bank statements, new cards, tax documents and medical paperwork, so a worn or compromised lock is worth fixing promptly.

We replace and rekey locks on private wall-mount and post-mount boxes, apartment and condo mailbox banks, and cluster or community units. Many of these use small cylinder locks that wear out from weather and years of use. Some can be rekeyed to a new key, and others are better swapped for a new cylinder. We look at the box and tell you which makes sense.

Crenshaw Lock Company has served this area since 1987 under owner and lead technician David Shar. We are fully mobile with no storefront, so we bring the work to your door, your building or your complex.

One note on community and cluster units: some are owned and controlled by the postal service rather than the property. If your box is a postal-controlled unit, we will tell you honestly when the post office needs to be involved instead of us.

How our mailbox lock replacement service works

  1. 1

    Tell us about the mailbox

Call (323) 997-8867 and describe the box: private or cluster, wall, post or bank-style, and what is wrong, such as a lost key, a jammed lock or a change in who has access. This helps us bring the right parts.

  2. 2

    Confirm who controls the box

We check whether the mailbox belongs to you, your property or HOA, or is a postal-controlled unit. That determines whether we can service it directly or whether the post office must handle it.

  3. 3

    Inspect the lock and housing

We look at the cylinder, the latch and the door. Sometimes the lock is fine and the real problem is a bent door or a worn cam, and we say so.

  4. 4

    Rekey or replace

If the cylinder is in good shape, we can often rekey it so old keys stop working. If it is worn, damaged or corroded, we fit a new lock matched to your box.

  5. 5

    Cut and test keys

We cut new keys and test them several times, confirming the door opens smoothly, latches firmly and that old keys no longer work.

  6. 6

    Hand over and advise

We give you the keys and explain how to keep spares safe. For multi-box properties, we can discuss keeping track of keys as residents change.

What affects the price

  • Whether the lock can be rekeyed or the cylinder must be replaced outright
  • The mailbox type: single private box, a bank of apartment boxes, or a cluster unit
  • How many locks need work in one visit, such as a whole building or complex
  • The number of keys you need cut
  • Condition of the box, since rust, bent doors or damaged latches may need extra repair
  • Your location and the time of day or night you need us

Why choose us

  • We are fully mobile, so we service the mailbox where it sits, including lobbies, curbs and complex entrances
  • In business since 1987, led by owner David Shar, so the person who knows the work is involved
  • We are upfront when a box is postal-controlled and not ours to alter
  • We will rekey when that solves the problem rather than selling a replacement you do not need
  • We handle both single home mailboxes and multi-unit properties, such as managers re-securing boxes after turnover
  • Available 24/7 for urgent situations, like a stolen key or suspected mail tampering

Where we work

We serve Greater Los Angeles and Ventura County, coming to homes, apartment buildings and communities throughout. In the San Fernando Valley and the San Gabriel Valley, we often work on residential mailboxes and on HOA or complex cluster units. On the Westside and in Central and South LA, we regularly see older apartment mailbox banks where locks have worn out across many units.

We also work throughout the South Bay and Harbor area, the Gateway Cities and parts of Ventura County. Because we are fully mobile, there is no shop to visit. Call (323) 997-8867 with your address and we will let you know whether we can help with your mailbox.

Mailbox Lock Replacement — FAQs

Can you rekey my mailbox lock instead of replacing it?
Often yes. If the cylinder is in good working condition, rekeying changes it so old keys no longer work. If it is worn or corroded, replacement is the better choice. Call (323) 997-8867 and we can help you figure out which applies.
I lost my mailbox key. What should I do?
We can come out, open the box if it is one we are able to service, and fit a new lock with fresh keys. Replacing the lock also means the lost key will no longer work.
Do you work on USPS cluster or community mailboxes?
It depends on who controls the unit. Postal-controlled cluster boxes are generally handled by the post office. If the boxes belong to a property or HOA, we can often service them. We will tell you plainly which case you have.
Can you do all the mailboxes in my apartment building?
Yes, for property-owned mailbox banks we can rekey or replace multiple locks in one visit. Call (323) 997-8867 to describe the building and number of boxes.
Should I rekey the mailbox when I move into a new home?
It is a sensible step. Previous residents, or others, may still hold keys. Rekeying or replacing the lock ensures only the keys you hold work.
Do you offer mailbox lock service at night or on weekends?
Yes, we are available 24/7. This can matter if you suspect mail theft or tampering and want the lock secured quickly.
Do I need to be home during the service?
Usually someone with authority over the box should be present, or we should make arrangements ahead of time. For managed properties, a manager can authorize the work.
Will a new lock fit my existing mailbox?
In most cases we can match a lock to your box. We inspect the door and the cylinder style first so the replacement fits and latches properly.
