Most vehicles built since the late 1990s have an immobilizer. A small transponder chip inside the key sends a coded signal, and if the car doesn't recognize it, the engine won't start, even if the key is cut perfectly. That is why a plain hardware-store copy of a modern car key often turns the lock but never starts the car.

Transponder key programming is the step that teaches your vehicle to accept a key. It matters when you have lost your only key, want a spare before that happens, or have a key that has stopped working. The right approach depends on the make, model, and year, and on whether you still have a working key to start from.

Crenshaw Lock Company is fully mobile. There is no shop to tow your car to. We have served Los Angeles and Ventura County since 1987, and owner and lead tech David Shar and our team bring the work to your driveway, parking lot, or the roadside. Call (323) 997-8867 any hour.

How our transponder key programming service works

  1. 1

    Tell us about the vehicle

When you call, we ask for the make, model, and year, and whether you have a working key. This tells us what kind of key and programming method your car needs, and whether the job is adding a spare or replacing a lost key.

  2. 2

    We come to you

Our technician travels to your location anywhere in our service area. Because the work happens at the vehicle, you don't need to drive it or arrange a tow.

  3. 3

    Verify ownership

Before we make a key for a vehicle, we ask for proof that it is yours, such as ID and registration or title. This protects you and is standard responsible practice.

  4. 4

    Prepare the key

We match the correct transponder key or fob for your vehicle. If the key needs to be cut, we cut it to your vehicle's lock on site, using the car's key code or by working from the lock.

  5. 5

    Program to the immobilizer

We connect programming equipment to the vehicle and register the new key with its immobilizer system. Depending on the vehicle, this may also involve removing a lost key so it can no longer start the car.

  6. 6

    Test everything

We confirm the key turns in the ignition or starts the car, that the door lock works, and that any remote buttons function. You leave with keys you have seen work.

What affects the price

  • Make, model, and year of the vehicle, since some systems are much more involved to program than others
  • Type of key: basic transponder chip key, remote head key, flip key, or smart proximity key
  • Whether you have a working key to copy from or all keys are lost, which changes the steps required
  • Whether the key blade needs to be cut as well as programmed
  • Number of keys needed, such as a single replacement versus a spare plus a backup
  • Time of day and how far we travel to reach you

Why choose us

  • Fully mobile service, so we program the key where the vehicle sits instead of requiring a tow
  • Serving Greater LA and Ventura County since 1987, with David Shar as owner and lead tech
  • Available 24/7, which matters when you are stranded or locked out of starting your car at night
  • We explain what your specific vehicle needs and the factors affecting cost before work begins
  • Programming is tested on site, including start, door lock, and remote functions where applicable
  • We verify ownership before making keys, which keeps your vehicle secure

Transponder Key Programming — FAQs

What is a transponder key?
It is a key with a small chip in the head that sends a code to your car's immobilizer. The engine will only start if the code matches what the car expects.
Can you program a key if I lost all my keys?
In many cases, yes. We can often create and program a new key without an existing one, though the process depends on the vehicle. Call (323) 997-8867 with your make, model, and year.
Do I need to tow my car?
No. We are fully mobile and do the programming at your vehicle, wherever it is parked within our service area.
Why doesn't a regular copied key start my car?
A key that is only cut to match the lock will turn but lacks a chip registered to the immobilizer. The car blocks the engine until a properly programmed key is used.
Is it better to get a spare before I lose my only key?
Usually yes. Adding a key when you still have a working one is typically simpler than replacing after all keys are lost. Call (323) 997-8867 to discuss it.
What do I need to show you?
We ask for proof that the vehicle is yours, such as ID and registration or title. This is for your protection and to keep vehicles secure.
Can you program keys for any car?
Not every vehicle is the same, and some need specific equipment. Tell us the make, model, and year and we will be upfront about what we can do.
Do you also handle remote buttons and key cutting?
Often, yes. Depending on your key type, we can cut the blade and program the remote functions along with the transponder. Ask when you call.
