A lock that sticks, spins loosely, or needs a shoulder shove to latch is usually telling you something specific. The cause may be a worn cylinder, a misaligned strike plate, a loose mounting screw, a door that has shifted with the seasons, or a latch that has gummed up over the years. Many of these problems can be fixed without replacing the hardware, and that is often where we start.

Crenshaw Lock Company has served Los Angeles-area homeowners and renters since 1987, led by owner and lead technician David Shar. We are fully mobile, so there is no shop to visit. We come to your door, look at the lock in the setting where it actually fails, and repair what can be repaired.

If a lock is beyond reasonable repair, we will say so and explain why. Our aim is a door that locks and unlocks smoothly and securely, whether that comes from adjusting, repairing or replacing a part.

How our lock repair service works

  1. 1

    Tell us the symptoms

When you call (323) 997-8867, describe what the lock does: sticks, turns only part way, jams with the key, wobbles, or won't latch. Those details help us come prepared for the likely cause.

  2. 2

Test the lock on the door

At your home we operate the key, thumb turn, deadbolt and latch, with the door open and closed. Testing in place shows whether the problem is the lock itself or how the door meets the frame.

  3. 3

    Find the root cause

We check the cylinder, the latch and bolt movement, the mounting screws, the strike plate and the door alignment. A lock that seems broken is sometimes a door that has shifted slightly.

  4. 4

    Repair or adjust

Depending on what we find, we may tighten or realign hardware, reposition a strike plate, clean and lubricate the mechanism, or replace worn internal parts.

  5. 5

Recommend replacement only when it makes sense

If the lock is badly worn, damaged or no longer secure, we explain the options before doing anything. You decide whether to repair further or replace.

  6. 6

    Confirm it works

Before we leave, we cycle the lock with your keys several times and confirm the door closes, latches and locks smoothly.

What affects the price

  • The cause of the problem: a loose screw or misaligned strike plate is a different job than worn internal parts.
  • The type of lock, such as a deadbolt, knob, lever handle or multipoint lock, and how readily parts are available.
  • Whether the door or frame needs adjustment in addition to the lock.
  • Whether a repair is practical or replacement is the better choice for the lock's condition.
  • How many locks on the property need attention during the same visit.
  • The time of day and location of the visit, including after-hours requests.

Why choose us

  • We are fully mobile, so repairs happen at your door, where the problem can actually be seen.
  • We have been working in the Los Angeles area since 1987, with owner David Shar leading the work.
  • We look at door alignment as well as the lock, since many sticking locks are really door problems.
  • We favor repairing a lock when that is sensible rather than pushing replacement.
  • We explain what we found and what your options are before work begins.
  • We are available 24/7, which matters when a jammed lock leaves a door that will not secure.

Where we work

Our mobile service covers Greater Los Angeles and parts of Ventura County. In the San Fernando Valley and the San Gabriel Valley, we repair locks in single-family homes, townhomes and apartments. We also work throughout the South Bay and Harbor area and the Westside, where older doors and coastal conditions can leave latches and cylinders stiff or worn.

We also serve the Gateway Cities, Central and South LA, and parts of Ventura County. Because we travel to you, there is no shop to visit: call (323) 997-8867, tell us where you are and what the lock is doing, and we will let you know if we can help in your area.

Lock Repair — FAQs

Why does my key stick or turn hard in the lock?
Common causes include a worn key, dirt or debris in the cylinder, a worn internal mechanism, or a door that is misaligned and putting pressure on the bolt. We test it on the door to find which. Call (323) 997-8867 to describe what you are seeing.
Can a deadbolt that won't fully extend be repaired?
Often, yes. The bolt may be hitting a misaligned strike plate or a door that has shifted. Adjusting the strike or the door frequently solves it without replacing the deadbolt.
My lock is loose and wobbles. Is that serious?
A loose lock can be a security concern and can wear faster. Often the mounting screws or the internal fasteners need tightening, and we check whether anything is worn or damaged.
Should I repair or replace a worn lock?
It depends on its condition and the security level you need. If a repair is reasonable, we will do it. If the lock is badly worn or damaged, we will explain why replacement may be better and leave the choice to you.
What if my lock is jammed and I can't open the door?
Call us at (323) 997-8867 any time, day or night. We are mobile and can come to you to work on the lock and get the door operating again, with as little damage as we can manage.
Does the door ever cause lock problems?
Yes. Doors can swell, sag or shift with weather and age, so the latch and bolt no longer line up with the frame. We check alignment as part of the repair.
Do you repair locks on apartments and rentals?
We repair locks on residential doors including houses, condos and apartments. If you rent, it is wise to check with your landlord or property manager about who handles lock repairs.
Will lubricating the lock fix it?
Sometimes it helps, but it is not always the answer, and the wrong lubricant can attract dirt. If the problem keeps coming back, the cause is probably mechanical or alignment-related and worth having inspected.
