Lock replacement in Los Angeles is rarely a simple swap. A 1920s Craftsman in Leimert Park may still have its original mortise lock, worn to the point that the key has to be jiggled before it turns. A courtyard apartment in Koreatown might have a builder-grade knob that has been rekeyed so many times the pins are tired. A West Adams bungalow might need a stronger deadbolt after someone tried the door. Each one needs a different answer, and that is the work we have been doing around Los Angeles since 1987.

Crenshaw Lock Company is fully mobile. There is no storefront to visit, because the work happens at your door. Owner and lead technician David Shar built the business around coming to the customer with the hardware, tools and key machine needed to finish the job on site whenever possible, day or night.

On this page we explain how a lock replacement visit works, what affects the cost, and what to think about if you live in an older Los Angeles home where the doors, frames and hardware are not standard sizes. If you would rather just talk it through, call (323) 997-8867.

How it works in Los Angeles

  1. 1

Tell us about the door and the lock

When you call, we ask what kind of lock you have now, whether it is a knob, deadbolt, handleset or an old mortise lock, and what is wrong with it. Photos help. We also ask whether you want the new lock to match keys you already use or have a fresh key, so the technician arrives with suitable hardware.

  2. 2

On-site inspection of door, frame and strike

A new lock is only as good as the door it sits in. We check the bore and backset, the condition of the jamb and strike plate, and whether the door edge has been split or patched before. In older Los Angeles homes we often find mortise pockets, shimmed frames or doors that have settled, and we account for that before anything comes off.

  3. 3

Choose hardware that fits the home

We explain realistic options rather than pushing one product: a mortise-compatible replacement that keeps a period door intact, a conversion to a modern cylindrical deadbolt, a Grade-1 deadbolt for higher security, or a keypad or smart lock if that suits how you live. You decide before work begins.

  4. 4

Remove the old lock and install the new one

We remove the old hardware, adjust or fill the prep where needed, install the new lock, and reinforce the strike with longer screws into the framing when the door calls for it. The goal is a lock that throws smoothly without lifting or pushing on the door.

  5. 5

Key it the way you need

New locks can be keyed alike so one key opens the front, back and side doors, or set up so a landlord, tenant or housekeeper only has access where intended. We cut and test keys on site.

  6. 6

Test everything and walk you through it

Before we leave, every key is tried in every cylinder, the deadbolt is thrown with the door closed, and we show you any features of the new hardware. If something needs a follow-up part, we tell you plainly.

What affects the price

  • The type and security grade of the new lock you choose, from a standard residential deadbolt to a Grade-1 deadbolt, handleset, or electronic keypad or smart lock.
  • Whether the existing door prep fits the new hardware, or whether an old mortise pocket, an unusual backset, or a damaged edge has to be adapted, filled or reinforced.
  • How many locks are being replaced, and whether they all need to be keyed alike or set up with different access levels.
  • The condition of the door frame and strike, including repairs after a forced entry or reinforcement of a weak jamb.
  • Timing of the visit, since late-night, weekend and holiday emergency calls are handled differently from scheduled daytime appointments.
  • Any extra work at the same visit, such as security screen door locks, gate locks or interior doors.

Why Los Angeles chooses us

  • Local and family-run since 1987, with the owner, David Shar, still leading the technical work.
  • Fully mobile and available 24/7, so replacement happens at your door rather than requiring a trip to a shop.
  • Real experience with the older housing around Los Angeles, including original 1920s mortise locks, skeleton-key interior doors and wrought-iron security screen doors.
  • We explain options and cost factors before starting, and we will tell you when a rekey would solve the problem instead of a full replacement.
  • Keys are cut and tested on site, and multiple locks can be keyed alike so you carry fewer keys.
  • We pay attention to the frame and strike as well as the lock, because a strong deadbolt in a weak jamb is not real security.

Lock Replacement across Los Angeles

Our base is in the 90008 ZIP code, close to Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza and Leimert Park Village, so much of our lock replacement work is in the neighborhoods around them. The Spanish Colonial Revival and Craftsman bungalows of Leimert Park and West Adams often still have their original mortise locks, and many owners want to keep the look of the door while getting a deadbolt they can trust. A common job is a 1920s Craftsman duplex off Crenshaw Blvd where a tenant has moved out: we rekey what can be saved and replace a worn mortise lock with a modern deadbolt so the new tenant starts with secure, consistent keys.

Up the hill in View Park-Windsor Hills and Baldwin Hills, near Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, the period-revival and mid-century homes tend to have heavier doors, decorative handlesets and multiple entries, which makes keying alike especially useful. Further south and east, around 90043, 90062 and 90037 and toward Exposition Park and USC, wrought-iron security screen doors and window bars are common, and their locks wear out alongside the main door hardware. After a break-in in West Adams, for example, we have straightened a pried security screen door and installed a Grade-1 deadbolt on the entry behind it during the same visit.

We also cover the rest of the city: courtyard and dingbat apartments in Koreatown (90006) and Mid-City (90019, 90036), hillside homes in Hollywood below Griffith Observatory (90046, 90027), and lofts and newer multifamily in Downtown near Union Station and Walt Disney Concert Hall (90012). Travel along Crenshaw Blvd, La Brea Ave, Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Slauson Ave and the I-10 and I-110 corridors is part of every day for us.

Lock Replacement in Los Angeles — FAQs

Should I replace my lock or just rekey it?
If the lock works smoothly and you only need old keys to stop working, such as after a move-in or a tenant leaving, rekeying is usually enough. Replace the lock when it is worn, damaged, low-security, or when you want a different style such as a keypad. Call (323) 997-8867 and we will give you an honest recommendation.
Can you replace an original 1920s mortise lock in my Leimert Park or West Adams home?
Yes. Depending on the door, we can fit a modern mortise lock into the existing pocket to keep the period look, or convert the door to a cylindrical deadbolt and fill the old prep. We look at the door's thickness and condition before recommending either path.
Are you available for emergency lock replacement at night?
Yes. We are 24/7 and fully mobile, so if a lock has failed or a door was forced after hours, call (323) 997-8867 and we will dispatch a technician. We do not quote a specific arrival time, but we will keep you informed.
Do you have a shop I can bring my lock to?
No. Crenshaw Lock Company is mobile only, with no storefront. We come to your home, apartment or rental property anywhere in our Los Angeles service area and do the work on site.
Can all my new locks use one key?
Usually, yes, as long as the locks share a compatible keyway. We can key the front door, back door and side gate alike, or set up different access for a landlord and tenant in a duplex or courtyard building.
Can you replace the lock on my wrought-iron security screen door?
Yes. Security screen doors are common across South LA, and their locks and strikes wear out or get damaged. We can replace the lock and, when possible, adjust a bent or pried frame so it latches properly again.
How much does lock replacement cost in Los Angeles?
It depends on the hardware you choose, how many locks are involved, whether the door or frame needs adapting or repair, and when the visit happens. We explain those factors and your options before any work starts. Call (323) 997-8867 to talk through your situation.
What security grade of deadbolt should I choose?
For exterior doors, especially after a break-in, many homeowners choose a Grade-1 deadbolt for stronger construction. We also reinforce the strike with longer screws into the framing, since the frame is often the weak point in older Los Angeles homes.
