A commercial door that slams, drifts open, or refuses to latch is more than an annoyance. It can leave a storefront unsecured overnight, let a fire-rated corridor door stand open, or catch a customer's hand or a stroller wheel. In most cases the cause is the hydraulic door closer mounted at the top of the door: a leaking cylinder, worn arm linkage, loosened mounting screws, or valve settings that drifted out of adjustment over years of daily use.

Crenshaw Lock Company has worked on Los Angeles doors since 1987, and owner and lead technician David Shar has seen just about every closer style the city has to offer, from heavy cast-iron units on older brick commercial buildings to the slim surface-mounted closers on newer mixed-use storefronts. Because we are fully mobile, the work happens at your door, with the parts and tools we need in the van. There is no shop to drive to, and nothing to remove and drop off.

Our goal on every call is straightforward: figure out whether your closer can be adjusted, whether it needs replacement, and whether something else, like a sagging hinge or a misaligned strike, is really the culprit. We explain what we find before doing the work, so you can make a clear decision for your business or building.

How it works in Los Angeles

  1. 1

    Phone conversation and description

When you call (323) 997-8867, we ask what the door is doing: slamming, closing too slowly, not latching, leaking oil, or hanging open. We also ask about the door type (aluminum storefront, hollow metal, wood) and whether the closer is surface-mounted, concealed in the header, or set in the floor. That helps us bring the right parts.

  2. 2

    On-site diagnosis

At your door, we watch it cycle several times, check the closer body for oil residue, inspect the arm and shoe, test hinges or pivots for wear, and confirm the latch lines up with the strike. A lot of 'closer problems' turn out to be door alignment issues, and we tell you honestly when that is the case.

  3. 3

    Adjustment where it will hold

If the closer is sound, we tune its valves: sweep speed, latch speed, and backcheck where equipped. We tighten or re-anchor loose mounting screws, which is common on aluminum frames and older wood doors, and set the closing force appropriate for the door's size and use.

  4. 4

Replacement when the unit has failed

A closer that leaks hydraulic fluid generally cannot be reliably fixed by adjustment. In that case we replace it with a commercial closer sized to the door, choosing a mounting style (regular arm, parallel arm, or top jamb) that fits the frame and, where possible, uses existing holes to keep the door looking clean.

  5. 5

    Final testing and walkthrough

We cycle the door repeatedly, check that it latches every time, confirm it is not slamming, and test it with the HVAC running if building pressure affects it. Then we show you or your manager what was done and what to watch for going forward.

What affects the price

  • Whether the existing closer only needs adjustment and re-anchoring, or has failed and must be replaced
  • The type of closer involved: surface-mounted, concealed overhead, or floor-mounted closers each require different parts and labor
  • Door size, weight, and material, which determine the closer size and grade needed
  • Condition of the frame and door, including stripped screw holes, damaged aluminum headers, or worn hinges and pivots that must be addressed
  • Time of service, since after-hours and weekend calls are handled differently than regular business hours
  • Any related hardware work done during the same visit, such as strike adjustment, panic bar service, or lock repair

Why Los Angeles chooses us

  • Fully mobile service: we diagnose, adjust and replace closers at your building, with no storefront drop-off required
  • Available 24/7, which matters when a door will not latch at closing time and the business cannot be left open
  • Serving Los Angeles since 1987, with owner David Shar personally leading the work
  • Honest diagnosis: if a hinge, pivot or strike is the real problem, we say so rather than selling a closer you do not need
  • Full locksmith capability on the same visit, so lock, deadbolt and panic hardware issues can be handled alongside the closer
  • Experience with the city's mix of older commercial buildings, courtyard apartments, and newer mixed-use properties

Door Closer Repair across Los Angeles

Our home base is in the 90008 area near Leimert Park and Baldwin Hills, and a lot of our door closer work happens close by: small shops and restaurants in Leimert Park Village, businesses along Crenshaw Blvd and Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, and the many courtyard apartment buildings in Crenshaw and View Park-Windsor Hills whose lobby and gate doors take a beating. Older buildings here often have wood entry doors on original frames, and stripped mounting screws are a frequent reason a closer pulls loose and lets the door drift.

Further out, we serve storefronts and offices in West Adams near Exposition Park and USC (90007, 90018), Koreatown's dense mix of retail plazas and multistory apartments (90006, 90019), Hollywood (90046, 90027), and Downtown around Union Station and the Walt Disney Concert Hall area (90012). Aluminum storefront doors in these districts commonly use offset pivots and concealed overhead closers, which call for different handling than the surface closers on older brick buildings.

Because we drive to you, we travel the I-10, I-110, I-405, La Brea Ave and Slauson Ave corridors daily. Whether your door is in a strip center off Crenshaw or a lobby in a Koreatown high-rise, the service is the same: a technician arriving with closers, arms and mounting hardware, ready to get the door closing and latching properly.

Door Closer Repair in Los Angeles — FAQs

Why does my commercial door slam shut?
Usually the closer's latch speed valve is set too fast or the hydraulic fluid has leaked out, leaving nothing to cushion the swing. If there is oil on the closer body or the floor beneath it, replacement is typically needed. If not, an adjustment often solves it. Call (323) 997-8867 and we can talk through what you are seeing.
My door will not latch. Is that the closer?
Sometimes. A closer with too little latch force will stop the door just short of the strike. But a sagging door, worn hinges, or a misaligned strike can cause the same symptom, which is common in older Los Angeles buildings that have settled. We check all of these on site before recommending a fix.
Can you repair a leaking door closer, or does it have to be replaced?
Once a hydraulic closer leaks fluid, its internal seals have failed, and adjusting it will not hold for long. For commercial doors we generally recommend replacing the unit with one sized correctly for the door.
Do you service concealed and floor-mounted closers on storefront doors?
Yes. Many aluminum storefronts in Koreatown, Hollywood and Downtown use concealed overhead closers in the header or floor closers under the door. These take more involved work than surface closers, and we will assess the specific unit on site.
Can you come after hours if my business cannot be locked up?
Yes. We are available 24/7 and fully mobile. If your door will not close or latch at the end of the day, call (323) 997-8867 and we will arrange a technician to come to your location.
Do you have a shop where I can bring my door closer?
No. Crenshaw Lock Company is mobile only, and closer work is best done with the closer mounted on the door anyway, since adjustment depends on the actual door weight and frame.
Do you work on apartment building lobby and gate doors?
Yes. Courtyard apartments and multifamily buildings around Leimert Park, Crenshaw, West Adams and Koreatown rely on closers to keep entry doors and gates secure. We adjust or replace them, and can address the locks on the same visit.
How much does door closer repair cost?
It depends on whether the closer needs adjustment or replacement, the closer type, the door's size and condition, any frame repair, and the time of the call. We explain our findings and options before doing the work. Call (323) 997-8867 to discuss your door.
