A standard pin-tumbler deadbolt from a big-box store keeps honest people honest, but it has well-known weaknesses. It can be picked, bumped with a filed-down key, or drilled through the shear line, and its keys can be copied at almost any kiosk. High security locks are built to close those gaps. They use hardened steel inserts, extra locking elements such as sidebars or rotating pins, and patented keyways whose blanks are not sold over the counter.
In Los Angeles that matters for a lot of different buildings. A 1920s Craftsman bungalow in West Adams may still have its original mortise lock behind a wrought-iron screen door. A Koreatown or Downtown landlord may be tired of former tenants handing copied keys to who knows whom. A small shop on Crenshaw Blvd may want a key system where duplicates can only be cut with authorization. Each of those calls for a slightly different approach, and we would rather fit the hardware to the door than sell everyone the same cylinder.
Crenshaw Lock Company has worked out of the 90008 area since 1987, and owner and lead tech David Shar still treats high security work as a craft: measuring backsets, checking how a door actually sits in its frame, and making sure a strong cylinder isn't installed into a weak door. Because we are a mobile-only service, there is no storefront to visit. We bring the tools and hardware to you, day or night.
How it works in Los Angeles
- 1
Talk through the door and the goal
When you call, we ask what you are protecting and what worries you: a recent break-in, lost keys, unauthorized copies, or simply upgrading old hardware. We also ask about the door itself, such as whether it is an original mortise setup, a modern bored deadbolt, a commercial storefront, or a gate. That lets us bring hardware likely to fit.
- 2
On-site inspection
At your property we look at more than the lock. We check the frame, strike plate, hinge side, and any security screen or gate in front of the door. A drill-resistant cylinder does little good if the jamb splits with a kick, so we will tell you plainly if the door or frame needs reinforcement too.
- 3
Choosing the right high security hardware
We explain the options in plain language: which cylinders resist picking and bumping, which have hardened drill protection, and which use restricted keyways that control duplication. For older homes we discuss whether to retrofit a high security cylinder into an existing mortise body or convert to a modern Grade-1 deadbolt.
- 4
Installation and reinforcement
We install the lock, adjust it so the bolt throws fully without binding, and add long-screw strike plates or reinforcement where needed. On doors with wrought-iron screens we make sure both locks work together and that the screen door still latches cleanly.
- 5
Keys, key control and walkthrough
We cut your keys, explain how restricted duplication works, and record who is authorized to request copies if your system uses key control. Before we leave, you operate every lock yourself so you know it works smoothly.

What affects the price
- The brand and security level of the cylinder or lock, since restricted-keyway and drill-resistant products vary considerably in cost.
- How many doors you want secured and whether you want them all keyed alike to a single high security key.
- The condition and type of the door: retrofitting an original 1920s mortise lock, converting to a bored deadbolt, or working on a commercial storefront each involves different labor.
- Whether the frame, strike, or a security screen door needs reinforcement or repair to make the new lock effective.
- The number of keys cut and whether you want a registered key-control program for authorized duplicates.
- Timing of the visit, since after-hours or emergency calls following a break-in can affect the total.
Why Los Angeles chooses us
- Locally rooted since 1987 in the 90008 area, with long experience on the period homes of Leimert Park, Baldwin Hills, View Park and West Adams.
- Owner David Shar is directly involved, so you are talking with someone who knows the hardware, not a call-center script.
- Fully mobile and available 24/7, which is especially useful when you need a door re-secured right after a break-in.
- We assess the whole door system, including frames, strikes and wrought-iron screen doors, instead of just swapping a cylinder.
- Honest recommendations: if a standard Grade-1 deadbolt fits your situation better than a high security system, we will say so.
- Comfortable with older hardware, including original mortise locks, so historic doors can be upgraded without unnecessary damage.
High Security Locks across Los Angeles
Our home base is the 90008 ZIP code, the neighborhood around Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza and Leimert Park Village. Many of the streets here, and in nearby View Park-Windsor Hills, are lined with Spanish Colonial Revival homes, Craftsman bungalows and mid-century estates. Plenty of them still carry original mortise locks. Those old locks have character, but many are easy to defeat and their keys are often generic. Fitting high security cylinders, or converting carefully to modern deadbolts, is some of our most frequent specialty work in these blocks between Crenshaw Blvd, Martin Luther King Jr Blvd and Slauson Ave.
In West Adams (90018) and around Exposition Park and USC (90007, 90037), we often see doors behind wrought-iron security screens and windows with bars. After a break-in, a resident may need a pried screen door straightened and a Grade-1 deadbolt or high security cylinder installed the same night. Rental owners in Koreatown (90006, 90019) and the courtyard and dingbat apartment buildings across the city frequently choose restricted keyways so former tenants cannot quietly make extra copies.
We also travel north and east, toward Hollywood (90046, 90027) near Griffith Observatory and into Downtown (90012) around Union Station and Walt Disney Concert Hall, using the I-10, I-110 and I-405 to reach homes, offices and storefronts. Wherever you are in the city, we come to you, since we are mobile only.
