Los Angeles homes are not one type of home, and their locks aren't either. A 1920s Craftsman in Leimert Park may still have its original mortise lock and a skeleton-key closet door. A mid-century place in View Park might have a deadbolt added decades after the house was built. A dingbat apartment in Koreatown or a newer building near Downtown brings tenant turnover, master-key questions and a front gate controlled by the landlord. A good residential locksmith needs to handle all of these without pushing every customer toward the same product.

Crenshaw Lock Company has worked on Los Angeles homes since 1987, and owner and lead technician David Shar built the business around a mobile model. We don't run a storefront. A fully equipped service vehicle comes to your house, so rekeying, repairs and installations are usually done on site in one visit.

This page covers what our residential service includes, how a typical visit goes, what affects the cost, and what we've learned working in neighborhoods from Crenshaw and West Adams to Hollywood. If you already know what you need, call (323) 997-8867. We answer around the clock.

How it works in Los Angeles

  1. 1

Tell us about the door and the lock

When you call, we'll ask what's going on: locked out, keys lost, new tenant, sticking lock, a break-in, or a planned upgrade. A rough description of the hardware helps, such as an old mortise lock with a thumb latch, a standard knob with a deadbolt, a security screen door, or a keypad. Photos help too. This lets us bring the right cylinders, strike plates and parts.

  2. 2

    On-site assessment

At your home, the technician checks the lock, the door, the frame and the strike. Many problems people blame on the lock come from a sagging door, a shifted strike plate or a warped frame, which is common in older Los Angeles houses. We explain what we find and whether a repair, a rekey or a replacement makes more sense before any work begins.

  3. 3

Clear options and agreement on scope

Some customers want to keep an original 1920s mortise set for its character. Others want a modern Grade-1 deadbolt or a smart lock. We describe the tradeoffs in security, cost and appearance, then go over pricing for the chosen option before starting. Nothing extra gets added without your approval.

  4. 4

The work, done at your door

Rekeying, pin changes, cylinder swaps, deadbolt installs, mortise repairs, strike reinforcement and security screen door adjustments are generally handled from the mobile van. If a door needs boring for a new deadbolt, or a damaged frame needs reinforcing after a forced entry, we do that on site too.

  5. 5

    Testing, keys and walkthrough

Before we leave, every lock is tested with the door open and closed, from inside and outside. We cut and check your new keys, show you how any new hardware works, and point out other weak spots we noticed, such as a back door without a deadbolt or an old window bar latch.

What affects the price

  • The type of work: rekeying an existing lock generally costs less than replacing hardware, and repairing an original mortise lock is priced differently from installing a new deadbolt.
  • How many locks and doors are involved. Rekeying a whole house or a duplex to a single key is scoped differently from servicing one front door.
  • The hardware you choose: standard residential deadbolts, Grade-1 commercial-grade locks, high-security cylinders and smart locks vary widely in parts cost.
  • The condition of the door and frame. Pried frames, split jambs, misaligned strikes or bent security screen doors after a break-in add labor beyond the lock itself.
  • Older or specialty locks: vintage mortise locks, skeleton-key interior doors and discontinued hardware may need extra time or hard-to-find parts.
  • Timing: late-night, weekend and holiday emergency calls can be priced differently from scheduled daytime appointments, and we'll tell you up front.

Why Los Angeles chooses us

  • Serving Los Angeles since 1987, with owner David Shar still working as lead technician.
  • Fully mobile and available 24/7. With no storefront, the work comes to your home, apartment or duplex.
  • Experience with the city's older housing stock, including original mortise locks, skeleton-key interior doors, and the wrought-iron security screen doors and window bars common across South LA.
  • Repair before replace. If an original lock can be serviced or rekeyed, we say so instead of selling new hardware.
  • Pricing explained and agreed before work starts, based on your actual door, lock and situation.
  • One call covers lockouts, rekeys after a move or tenant change, post-break-in re-securing and planned security upgrades.

Residential Locksmith across Los Angeles

Our home base is in 90008, the area around Leimert Park, Baldwin Hills and the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, and much of our residential work happens within a few miles of Crenshaw Blvd. Leimert Park Village and the streets around it are full of 1920s and 1930s Spanish Colonial Revival homes and Craftsman bungalows, many still with original front-door mortise locks. A typical call is a rekey after a tenant moves out of a Craftsman duplex off Crenshaw Blvd, where the worn mortise lock gets replaced with a modern deadbolt and both units get fresh keys. In View Park-Windsor Hills and Baldwin Hills, near Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, the period-revival and mid-century homes often have heavy custom doors and older hardware that needs careful fitting rather than a quick swap.

Farther east and north, the work changes with the neighborhood. In West Adams (90016 and 90018), historic bungalows and courtyard apartments often have wrought-iron security screen doors. One recent job was re-securing a bungalow after a break-in: straightening a pried screen door, reinforcing the strike and installing a Grade-1 deadbolt. Around Exposition Park and USC in 90007 and 90037, we handle frequent rekeys for rentals with student turnover. In Koreatown (90006), Hollywood (90046 and 90027) and Downtown near Union Station and Walt Disney Concert Hall (90012), we serve apartment residents, condo owners and small landlords.

We travel using I-10, I-110, I-405, La Brea Ave, Martin Luther King Jr Blvd and Slauson Ave, the same roads our customers use, and we come to you wherever you are in the city. Not every call is about a house, either. We've helped plenty of residents locked out of their car in the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza parking structure on a weekend. If you live in Los Angeles and something is wrong with a lock, it's likely we've seen it before.

Residential Locksmith in Los Angeles — FAQs

Should I rekey or replace the locks on my Los Angeles home?
If your locks work well and you just need old keys to stop working, after a move, a lost key or a tenant change, rekeying is usually the practical choice. We change the pins inside the existing cylinder so only new keys fit. Replacement makes more sense when hardware is worn out, damaged, low quality, or when you want an upgrade such as a Grade-1 deadbolt. Call (323) 997-8867 and we can talk through your situation.
Can you repair the original mortise lock in my 1920s house?
Often, yes. Many Craftsman and Spanish Colonial homes in Leimert Park, West Adams and Baldwin Hills still have original mortise locks. Many can be cleaned, repaired or rekeyed, while some are too worn or need parts that are no longer made. We'll assess it honestly. If it can't be saved, we can add a modern deadbolt while keeping the original look where possible.
Do you have a shop I can bring my lock to?
No. Crenshaw Lock Company is fully mobile with no storefront. We come to your home with the tools and parts to do most residential work on site, which also lets us check the door and frame instead of looking at the lock alone.
Are you really available 24/7 for home lockouts and emergencies?
Yes. We take residential calls around the clock, including nights, weekends and holidays, for lockouts, lost keys and re-securing a home after a break-in. Call (323) 997-8867 at any hour and we'll tell you how soon we can get to you.
What do you do after a break-in?
We focus on getting the home secure again the same visit. That can mean rekeying or replacing compromised locks, reinforcing a damaged strike or frame, straightening or re-securing a pried wrought-iron security screen door, and installing stronger deadbolts. We'll also point out other vulnerable doors or windows we notice.
I'm a landlord with a duplex. Can you key all units efficiently?
Yes. Small landlords across South LA, Koreatown and the USC area often have us rekey between tenants and set up keying so each unit has its own key while shared doors or gates use a common one. Tell us how many doors are involved when you call so we can plan the visit.
Can you install smart locks or keypad deadbolts?
We install and set up many smart and keypad deadbolts, including ones you've already bought, as long as the door can accept them. On older doors with mortise pockets or unusual thickness, we'll check fit first and explain any modifications needed.
