When you get the keys to a new place in Los Angeles, you rarely know how many copies are still out there. Previous owners, former tenants, contractors, dog walkers, and a neighbor who watered the plants may all have one. Rekeying fixes that. We take apart the cylinder you already have, swap the internal pins for a new combination, and cut fresh keys to match. The old keys simply stop turning.

Rekeying is usually a sensible first step after buying a home, moving into a rental, ending a roommate arrangement, or turning over a unit between tenants. It keeps the hardware you like, whether that is a newer deadbolt or a solid knobset that suits your door, and it changes who has access. If a lock is worn out, damaged, or too weak to be worth keeping, we will tell you plainly and suggest a replacement.

Crenshaw Lock Company has worked in Los Angeles since 1987, and we are fully mobile. There is no storefront to visit. Our van carries pinning kits, key machines, and common hardware, so most rekeys are finished at your door in a single visit, any time of day or night.

How it works in Los Angeles

  1. 1

    Call and describe your locks

Call (323) 997-8867 and let us know how many doors you have, what kind of locks are on them (deadbolts, knobs, levers, mortise locks, screen-door locks), and whether you have a working key. A quick photo of the hardware helps us bring the right pins and key blanks.

  2. 2

    On-site inspection

When we arrive, we look over each lock and the door it sits in. We check whether the cylinder turns smoothly, whether the latch and strike line up, and whether the hardware is sound enough to rekey. On older Los Angeles homes we also check for original mortise locks and decide whether they can be rekeyed or are better retired.

  3. 3

    Re-pin the cylinders

We remove each cylinder, take out the old pin stack, and load a new combination. If you would like one key to open every exterior door, we key them all alike at this stage. Most residential brands, including Kwikset and Schlage, can be done right in the van.

  4. 4

    Cut and test new keys

We cut fresh keys on our mobile machine and try each one in every lock it should open, including locked and unlocked positions and from both sides of the door. Then we confirm that an old key no longer turns.

  5. 5

    Walkthrough and recommendations

Before we leave, we hand over your keys and point out anything worth fixing later, such as a misaligned strike, a weak latch, or a security screen door that does not latch fully. You decide what, if anything, comes next.

What affects the price

  • How many cylinders need rekeying. Each deadbolt, knob, lever, and screen-door lock is its own cylinder, so a duplex or multi-door home involves more work than a single front door.
  • Lock brand and type. Standard residential cylinders are straightforward. High-security, restricted-keyway, or older mortise cylinders take more time and specialized parts.
  • Whether you have a working key. If no key exists, we may need to pick or decode the lock before rekeying, which adds labor.
  • Keying all your locks to one key. Matching several locks so one key opens them all, or setting up a master key for a rental property, involves extra pinning work.
  • How many new keys you want cut, and whether any locks turn out to need repair or replacement rather than a rekey.
  • Time of service. Late-night, weekend, and holiday calls may be priced differently from a scheduled weekday visit.

Why Los Angeles chooses us

  • Serving Los Angeles since 1987, under owner and lead technician David Shar, so we have seen nearly every lock that shows up in the city's older housing.
  • Fully mobile and available 24/7. We bring the tools to you, which matters when you have just gotten the keys at 9 p.m. or a tenant moved out over the weekend.
  • Comfortable with vintage hardware. Many 1920s to 1940s homes near Leimert Park, West Adams, and Baldwin Hills still have original mortise locks, and we can tell you honestly whether yours is worth rekeying.
  • Straight advice on rekey versus replace. If a lock is worn or weak, we say so instead of re-pinning hardware that will not protect you.
  • We can key multiple doors, including security screen doors, to a single key, which cuts down on the bulging key ring common in South LA homes with both a wood door and a wrought-iron screen.
  • Practical help for landlords and property managers turning over courtyard apartments, duplexes, and small multifamily buildings between tenants.

Lock Rekeying across Los Angeles

Our home base is in the 90008 ZIP code, close to Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza and Leimert Park Village, so much of our rekeying work happens in the surrounding neighborhoods. The Spanish Colonial Revival homes and Craftsman bungalows around Leimert Park, Crenshaw, and West Adams often have a mix of hardware: an original mortise lock on the front door, a newer deadbolt someone added later, and a wrought-iron security screen door with its own key. A typical call involves a landlord rekeying a 1920s Craftsman duplex off Crenshaw Blvd after a tenant moves out. Sometimes the old mortise lock is too worn to keep, and we replace it with a modern deadbolt and key it to match the rest of the doors.

Up the hill in Baldwin Hills and View Park-Windsor Hills, with period-revival and mid-century homes near Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, new owners often want every exterior door, the side gate, and the garage entry on a single key. In West Adams and around Exposition Park and USC in 90007 and 90018, frequent renter turnover makes rekeying between leases a routine part of property management.

We also cover the rest of the city, including Koreatown (90006, 90019), Hollywood (90027, 90046), and Downtown (90012) near Union Station and Walt Disney Concert Hall, where dingbat apartments, mid-century buildings, and newer multifamily units each come with their own lock setups. We travel by Crenshaw Blvd, La Brea Ave, Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Slauson Ave, and the I-10 and I-110, so we reach most of Los Angeles easily. Just call and we will come to you.

Lock Rekeying in Los Angeles — FAQs

What is the difference between rekeying and replacing a lock?
Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing cylinder so a new key works and old keys do not. Replacing swaps out the entire lock. If your hardware is in good shape, rekeying is usually the simpler choice. If it is worn, damaged, or low quality, replacement makes more sense, and we will tell you which applies.
Should I rekey after buying a house in Los Angeles?
Yes, in most cases. You cannot know how many keys previous owners handed out to family, contractors, or agents. Rekeying every exterior lock, including side doors, garage entries, and security screen doors, is a fast way to make sure only you have access. Call (323) 997-8867 to set it up, even on move-in day.
Can you rekey the original mortise lock on my 1920s home?
Often, yes. Many mortise cylinders in older Leimert Park, West Adams, and Crenshaw homes can be re-pinned. Some are so worn or use such obsolete parts that a rekey would not hold up. In those cases we can fit a modern deadbolt and leave or retire the original hardware, whichever you prefer.
Can my security screen door and front door use the same key?
In many cases, yes, provided both locks share a compatible keyway. We check this on site. When the screen-door lock is not compatible, we can suggest a replacement cylinder that can be keyed to match.
I'm a landlord. Can you rekey units between tenants?
Yes. We regularly rekey duplexes, courtyard apartments, and small buildings across Los Angeles after move-outs. We can also set up master keying so you hold one key while each tenant's key opens only their own unit. Call (323) 997-8867 to arrange a turnover visit.
Do I need to be home, and do I need the old key?
Someone authorized to grant access should be there, and we may ask for proof that you live at or manage the property. Having a working key makes the job faster, but it is not required. We can rekey without one, though it may take a little longer.
Do you have a shop I can bring my locks to?
No. Crenshaw Lock Company is fully mobile with no storefront. We come to your home or building anywhere in Los Angeles, at any hour, and do the work on site.
Are you really available at night and on weekends?
Yes, we take calls 24/7, including weekends and holidays. If you have just moved in late or a roommate left with a key, call (323) 997-8867 and we will arrange a visit.
