A master key system lets the right people open the right doors with as few keys as possible. A property manager might carry one key that opens every unit. A tenant gets a key for only their own door. A maintenance worker gets a key for utility rooms and nothing else. Done well, it replaces a tangled ring of keys with a clear hierarchy, and it gives you a way to find out who holds access to what.

Azusa is a good example of why one-size-fits-all keying does not work. Within a few miles you have brick commercial buildings along Azusa Ave and Foothill Blvd, student-rental housing around Azusa Pacific University, small offices and shops near the Metro A Line stations, and newer master-planned and gated communities. Each has its own door hardware, its own turnover patterns, and its own risks if a key goes missing.

Crenshaw Lock Company has served Greater Los Angeles and Ventura County since 1987, led by owner and lead technician David Shar. We are mobile only, with no storefront. We meet you at the property, look at the actual doors, and build a system around how your people really use the building, not a generic chart.

How it works in Azusa

  1. 1

Walk the property and list the doors

We come to your Azusa location and go through every door that needs a lock: exterior entries, suites, storage rooms, mechanical rooms, gates and cabinets. We note the existing hardware and its condition. Older brick storefronts may have original mortise locks, while newer buildings may have standard cylinders or smart-lock-ready hardware.

  2. 2

Map out who needs access to what

We sit down with you and sort people into access levels. Owner, manager, staff, tenants, contractors and cleaners rarely need the same doors. This becomes the key hierarchy: which keys open one door, which open a group of doors, and which open everything.

  3. 3

Choose a keyway and key control level

You decide how protected the keys should be. A standard keyway lets any locksmith or hardware store cut copies. A restricted keyway limits duplication to authorized people, which matters when you want to control who holds a key. We explain the tradeoffs plainly so you can choose what fits.

  4. 4

Pin the cylinders and install the hardware

We build the cylinders to the agreed design and install them on site. Where a door's hardware cannot accept a proper cylinder, such as a worn mortise body, we discuss repair or replacement before going further.

  5. 5

Test every key against every door

Before we leave, each key is tried on every lock to confirm it opens what it should and nothing else. We fix anything that binds or crosses over, so problems do not show up at a bad moment later.

  6. 6

Deliver keys and a record of the system

We hand over the keys, label the system, and give you the structure of the key plan so you know what exists. We also explain how to add keys or doors later without breaking the hierarchy.

What affects the price

  • The number of doors and cylinders included in the system.
  • How many levels the hierarchy has, such as individual, group and grand master access.
  • Whether you choose a standard keyway or a restricted keyway with duplication control.
  • The condition and type of existing hardware, including older mortise locks that may need repair or replacement.
  • How many keys you need cut and how they are labeled and tracked.
  • Whether the work involves gates, cabinets or other non-door locks, and whether the job is scheduled or urgent after hours.

Why Azusa chooses us

  • Fully mobile service: we come to your Azusa building, look at the real doors and design around them.
  • Experience since 1987 with both older mechanical hardware and modern cylinders and smart-lock-ready doors.
  • Systems planned around how your people actually work, not a stock layout.
  • Honest advice on key control, including when a restricted keyway is worth it and when it is not.
  • 24/7 availability, so a lost master key or a sudden staff change can be addressed without waiting for business hours.
  • Owner-led work under David Shar, so the person who plans the system stands behind it.

Master Key System across Azusa

Downtown Azusa along Azusa Ave and Foothill Blvd, the historic Route 66 corridor, has brick commercial buildings from the early twentieth century, and some still carry original mortise locks. A master key system there often starts with restoring or upgrading those lock bodies so a shop, office and back storage room can work together. Many businesses in ZIP 91702 share buildings or back doors, which makes clear key levels especially useful.

Around Azusa Pacific University and Citrus College, the challenge is turnover. Student-rental properties see tenants come and go, and landlords with several units benefit from a system where each tenant has a key for their own unit while the owner or manager holds a master. Near the Metro A Line stations, small offices and service businesses can use the same approach to separate staff, vendors and owners.

In newer areas like Rosedale, hardware is often modern and ready for smart locks, while the gated Mountain Cove community near the San Gabriel Canyon and SR-39 has its own mix of shared and private access points. Whether you are off Interstate 210, Alosta Ave or Gladstone St, we come to you and plan the system on site.

Master Key System in Azusa — FAQs

What is a master key system?
It is a keying plan where each lock has its own key, and higher-level keys also open groups of locks. A manager might carry one key that opens many doors, while others carry keys limited to what they need.
Can you set up a system for a small Azusa business?
Yes. A system can be as small as a few doors, such as a front entry, an office and a storage room. Call (323) 997-8867 and we can talk through what you have.
What is a restricted key system?
A restricted keyway uses key blanks that are not freely sold, so copies are harder to make without authorization. It is a way to add key control on top of the master key hierarchy.
Can older mortise locks in downtown Azusa be part of a master key system?
Often yes, if the lock body is in good working condition. Some may need repair or a cylinder swap first. We inspect the hardware on site and tell you honestly what is practical.
Is this useful for student rentals near Azusa Pacific University?
It can be. Landlords can give each tenant a key to their unit while keeping a master for management. When a tenant leaves, you can rekey that unit without redoing the whole property.
Do you have a shop I can visit?
No. We are fully mobile and come to your property in Azusa and the surrounding area. Call (323) 997-8867 to arrange a visit.
Can I add doors or keys to the system later?
Generally yes, if the system was planned with room to grow. We explain how expansion works when we deliver the system, so later changes stay organized.
What if a master key is lost?
Tell us as soon as you can. Depending on the level of the key, we may rekey affected locks or redesign part of the system. We are available 24/7 at (323) 997-8867.
