A master key system lets different people open different doors with different keys, while a small group of authorized keys opens everything they should. Done well, a property manager carries one key instead of a ring of forty, a tenant's key opens only their own unit and the shared doors, and a lost key becomes a manageable problem instead of a building-wide emergency. Done badly, it becomes a tangle of overlapping cuts that nobody can account for.

Van Nuys is a good example of why design matters. Within a few miles you have dense apartment corridors along Sepulveda, Van Nuys Boulevard and Victory, aluminum-storefront commercial strips, auto row dealerships, and aviation-adjacent industrial buildings near Van Nuys Airport. Each calls for a different approach to hierarchy, hardware, and key control. A twelve-unit apartment building needs something very different from a multi-tenant office suite or a fleet yard with shared gates.

Crenshaw Lock Company has served Greater Los Angeles and Ventura County since 1987, led by owner and lead tech David Shar. We are mobile only, with no storefront, so every consultation happens on your site, where we can look at the actual doors, cylinders, and the way people move through the building.

How it works in Van Nuys

  1. 1

    On-site walkthrough and goals

We visit the property and look at every door that will be part of the system: unit entries, common areas, mechanical rooms, offices, gates, and storefronts. We ask who needs access to what, how many people hold keys today, and what has gone wrong in the past, such as lost keys, former tenants, or contractors with unaccounted copies.

  2. 2

    Designing the key hierarchy

We map out the levels of the system: individual change keys, group or floor masters, and a grand master if appropriate. We explain the tradeoffs plainly. More levels mean more convenience but also more cross-keying, which can reduce security if the system is stretched too far.

  3. 3

Choosing hardware and key control level

We match cylinders and keyways to your needs. Some properties are fine with a standard keyway, while others benefit from a restricted keyway, where duplication is limited to authorized parties. We also check existing hardware, such as Adams Rite deadlatches on aluminum storefronts, mortise locks, and panic devices, to confirm they can accept the cylinders.

  4. 4

    Installing and rekeying

We install or rekey cylinders on site, test each key against every lock it should and should not open, and fix any door that binds or needs adjustment. Older hardware that cannot reliably hold up is flagged so you can decide whether to repair or replace it.

  5. 5

    Documentation and key issuance

We provide a clear record of the system layout and how keys are assigned, so you can track who holds what. We talk through a sensible issuance and return process for tenants, employees, and vendors, and what to do when a key is lost.

  6. 6

    Ongoing changes and expansion

Tenants turn over and buildings grow. We can add doors, re-issue keys after a tenant change, or adjust the hierarchy later, and we are reachable around the clock when something urgent comes up.

What affects the price

  • The number of doors and cylinders included in the system, and whether every door is being converted at once or in phases.
  • How many levels the hierarchy needs, since a simple two-level system is less involved than one with multiple group masters and a grand master.
  • The keyway and key control level chosen, including whether you want restricted or patented keyways that limit unauthorized duplication.
  • The condition and type of existing hardware, such as aluminum-storefront deadlatches, panic devices, or vintage mortise locks that may need repair or replacement before they can join the system.
  • The number of keys to be cut and issued, and whether we are also setting up documentation and an issuance process.
  • Scheduling and access, including after-hours work to avoid disrupting tenants or business operations.

Why Van Nuys chooses us

  • Fully mobile service: we come to your Van Nuys property and design the system around the doors you actually have, not a catalog assumption.
  • Operating since 1987, with David Shar leading the work, so older and mixed hardware is familiar territory rather than a surprise.
  • We explain the security tradeoffs of master keying honestly, including when a simpler system is the better choice.
  • Experience across the full spectrum Van Nuys presents: apartment buildings, storefront commercial, auto and fleet operations, and industrial space.
  • We treat key control as more than hardware, helping you set up record keeping and a sensible process for issuing and recovering keys.
  • Available 24/7, so a lost master key or sudden tenant departure does not have to wait until Monday.

Master Key System across Van Nuys

Van Nuys is a central Valley community with an unusually wide range of buildings. Around the Van Nuys Civic Center, near the Valley Municipal Building and the Van Nuys Courthouse, you find offices, professional suites, and service businesses that often need clean separation between public areas, staff spaces, and storage. In ZIP code 91401, along Van Nuys Boulevard and Victory, many of the apartment buildings and mixed-use properties are ideal candidates for a proper master key system that gives managers one key for common areas while keeping each unit private.

The older parts of town, including the original townsite near Sylvan Park, have 1920s and 1940s bungalows and small courtyard buildings with vintage mortise locks. When a landlord owns several of these, we look for ways to bring them under a coherent key plan without ripping out period doors. Out toward Kester Ridge and the 1950s tract streets, the housing is more uniform, but small landlords with several rentals still benefit from a simple, well-documented system.

Commercial strips along Sepulveda Boulevard and Sherman Way, plus auto row and the industrial buildings near Van Nuys Airport in ZIP codes 91406 and 91411, bring aluminum storefronts with Adams Rite deadlatches, panic hardware, rear service doors, and shared gates. Tenant changes are frequent there, and a master key system makes re-securing a space far more manageable. With I-405 and US-101 close by, we reach properties across the area at any hour. Call (323) 997-8867 to talk through your building.
