The Toyota Corolla is one of the most common cars on Southern California roads, and its key system has changed noticeably between 2009 and 2024. Older Corollas use a chipped transponder key with a metal blade, while newer models on most trims use a Smart Key proximity fob with push-button start. Knowing which system your car has is the first step toward getting the right replacement.
The exact key, chip and programming for your Corolla depend on its trim and VIN, so we always confirm the correct key by VIN before cutting or programming anything. That avoids wrong parts, wasted trips and keys that turn the lock but won't start the engine.
Crenshaw Lock Company has served Greater Los Angeles and Ventura County since 1987. We are fully mobile with no storefront: we come to your vehicle at home, work or wherever it's parked, whether you need a spare key or have lost every key you own.
Toyota Corolla key systems by year
2009–2013
Corollas from these years generally use a transponder (chip) key with a metal blade. The blade is cut to match the door and ignition, and a chip in the head communicates with the car's immobilizer so the engine will start. Replacement usually means cutting a new blade and programming the chip to the vehicle. The exact key and chip depend on trim and VIN, so we confirm the correct key by VIN first.
2014–2019
Most Corollas in this range continue to use a bladed transponder key, but a Smart Key system is available on some trims. A bladed key needs cutting plus chip programming, while a Smart Key car needs a compatible proximity fob programmed to the vehicle, often with an emergency blade inside. Because the system varies by trim, we verify by VIN which key your car requires before cutting or programming.
2020–2024
Most trims in these years use a Smart Key proximity fob with push-button start, letting you unlock and start the car while the fob stays in your pocket. The fob typically holds a hidden emergency key for the door. Replacement involves supplying a compatible fob, programming it to the car and cutting the emergency blade. Some trims may differ, so we confirm the correct key by VIN.
Exact key, chip and programming vary by trim and VIN — we confirm the right key for your car before cutting.
