Losing the key to a BMW 5 Series is stressful, especially when the car is parked at home, work or a roadside. Crenshaw Lock Company has served Greater Los Angeles and Ventura County since 1987, and we are fully mobile: we come to wherever the car is. We do not operate a shop, so there is nothing to tow.
The 5 Series has used more than one key system between 2007 and 2024. Depending on the year and trim, yours may use an electronic slot-style key or a proximity fob, and newer cars use an encrypted version of that fob. The exact key, chip and programming depend on your trim and VIN, so we confirm the correct key by VIN before any cutting or programming begins.
Whether you need a spare while you still have a working key or you have lost every key (all keys lost), the process is similar: we verify ownership, confirm the key by VIN, and then provide and set up the key at your vehicle. Having a spare made before you lose the last key is usually simpler than starting from nothing.
BMW 5 Series key systems by year
Earlier years: Electronic slot-style key or Comfort Access proximity fob
Earlier 5 Series cars were fitted with either an electronic slot-style key, which is inserted into a slot in the dash, or a Comfort Access proximity fob that lets you enter and start the car with the fob nearby. Both contain electronics that the car must recognize before it will start. Replacement generally involves identifying the right key for the car, preparing it and pairing it to the vehicle. Which style your car has depends on trim and options, so we confirm the correct key by VIN before cutting or programming. This applies to both a spare key and an all-keys-lost situation.
Recent years: Encrypted Comfort Access proximity fob
Recent 5 Series models use an encrypted Comfort Access proximity fob, designed with stronger security than earlier fobs. Because of this, adding a key or recovering from all keys lost is confirmed by VIN, and the right fob must match your specific car. We work at your vehicle, verify ownership, confirm the correct fob by VIN and then set it up. Exact requirements vary by trim and model year, so we do not guess; the VIN tells us what your car needs. Add-a-key is generally easier when a working key is available, but all-keys-lost can also be handled.
